TWO men have been caught illegally prawning in the Hunter River with a hand-hauled net from an aluminium boat.

NSW Department of Primary Industries officers caught the men, from Hexham and Newcastle, at Devil's Elbow on Tuesday night.

Fisheries officers seized 10 kilograms of prawns.

If convicted the men face a maximum penalty of six months' jail.

The use of hand-hauled prawn nets is prohibited in the Hunter River from the Fitzgerald Bridge, Raymond Terrace, and further upstream of the Paterson and Hunter rivers.
